Prevent – Frequently asked questions (FAQ’s)

LGfL and Dfe have published support for Education Sector – this can be found below:

  1. Where can I find a summary of changes and the glossary of terms from the guidance for Schools and Early Years?
  1. Do you have any resources relevant to FE?

The following provide details on specific changes, FAQs and briefing notes for:

  1. We are a Special School who have pupils from our local area plus many other different LAs. Will the other authorities send us their CTLPs?
    1. Education settings will not readily have access to CTLP’s relating to every local authority that learners reside in. In these circumstances, we encourage the Designated Safeguarding Lead/ School Leader to reach out to the local authority Prevent Lead that covers the setting. This will enable the DSL to discuss requests relating to accessing information from other LAs and how this can be obtained if it is considered proportionate to do so.
    2. The DfE has published guidance on how to complete a risk assessment to assess the risk of people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

  1. Does PREVENT include/consider ideology/radicalisation in N Ireland which has a very specific context?
  • The UK’s counter terrorism strategy (CONTEST) does not address the threat of Northern Ireland Related Terrorism, which is managed by a separate strategic approach, led by the Northern Ireland Office. However, CONTEST does cover the threat from NIRT in mainland Great Britain.
  • The number of referrals for NIRT are relatively low and are grouped under the category ‘other’ within published statistics. In the period covering the April 2021 – March 2022 period, there were 100 referrals (2%) due to concerns related to ‘other’ types of radicalisation. A link to the published statistics can be found here – Individuals referred to and supported through the Prevent Programme statistics – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
  • If DSLs are concerned that a learner is susceptible to becoming or supporting terrorism (no matter the ideology) they should consider making a referral to Prevent.

  1. Anything around for special schools for complex children ? for pupils and staff?

  • The DfE is currently working with selected partners on new content to help SEND practitioners and students understand how to stay safe online. We expect that this content will be uploaded to Educate Against Hate in the coming months.

  • They have published comprehensive advice and made a range of resources freely available on our Educate Against Hate website to support teachers in protecting children from extremism and radicalisation. The safeguarding learners guidance may be a useful resource to support DSL’s adapt resources to suit the context of their school, staff and students.
