Wirral Schools Drug Policy Framework

Policy Update – October 2023:

Wirral School Drug Policy Template Framework

Version 7 of the revised Wirral Schools Drugs Policy Framework is intended to provide guidance for schools and other educational settings, to support development of a Whole School Approach to the drugs agenda within schools.

The framework has been devised by the Wirral Schools Drug Adviser*, Barnardo’s, in partnership with 4 Wirral schools. The document been developed in response to schools requesting a standardised document, to enable a consistent approach and response to any drug related matters in all primary, secondary, and alternative provisions across Wirral.

The advice is primarily for settings working with children and young people, including: headteachers, school staff and governing bodies in maintained schools, academies, free schools, independent schools, sixth form colleges, Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) and other forms of alternative education provision. It can be tailored for use in primary schools.

Vaping is highlighted as one of the key themes with advice and guidance for primaries, secondaries, and alternative provision, and includes external links to additional resources.

The vaping guidance has been taken from the North West Schools Vaping Policy Framework.  This has been published by the North West region of The Office of Health Improvement and Disparities.

Schools can contact the Wirral Schools Drug Adviser, *Lea Sloan, [email protected], for further advice and guidance on policy, curriculum, or any drug related matters.

The template can be amended to meet the individual school’s needs. It is applicable to staff, pupils, governors, parents / carers, external agencies and contains links to relevant national guidance, procedures on the management and response to drug related incidents as well as guidance on the delivery of appropriate drugs education.
