Harmful Practices (FGM, Honour-Based Violence and Forced Marriage)

There are particular forms of violence, mainly directed at women and girls, which are often defended on the basis of tradition, culture, religion or superstition by some community members. These are known as ‘harmful practices.’ Harmful practices are largely carried out without the consent of the girl/woman involved and include honour-based abuse, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

This full day training package covers some of the key issues and concerns surrounding these harmful practices.

The event is aimed at any frontline practitioners and managers who may work with the victims or perpetrators. It is advised that participants have completed the Virtual College e-learning modules before attending.

At the end of this course learners will:

  • Understand what is Harmful Practice; and gain knowledge of the   signs, symptoms, beliefs and values, and the risks associated
  • Respond effectively to concerns and disclosures using Local Domestic Abuse   Guidance, Protocol, Procedures and Referral Pathways;   ensuring use of   the “one chance rule”
  • Gain awareness of the impact Harmful Practice has on individuals and families;
  • Confidently Safety Plan and Risk Manage Harmful Practice within their role and organisation;
  • Understand the role of the Family Safety Unit and the Closed MARAC process.

This event is a multi-agency event so we would respectfully ask that organisations do not book more than 3 members of their teams on one event.
